Pirates pound Starbuck 21-14 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Paynesville Pirates pounded Starbuck 21-14 on Sunday in a Cornbelt League baseball game, using a 25-hit attack to make the game sound like a football score. The Pirates scored 21 runs on 25 hits, including 13 doubles, with Jordan Haag leading the way with five hits, three doubles, and eight RBIs. Starbuck had 14 runs on 14 hits as the teams combined for 35 runs and 39 hits. In addition to Haag, Brad Deyak, Jamie Paul, and Nate Schutz had three hits each for Paynesville, and Justin Butkofski, Seth Miller, and Shannon Olmscheid each had two. The Pirates (4-3) scored five runs in the top of the second to take a 7-2 lead, six in the fourth to build a 13-5 lead, and four in the sixth to lead 17-5. Olmscheid earned the pitching victory for Paynesville, throwing six innings. The Pirates lost to New London at home 8-0 on Wednesday, June 9, with Dane Kallevig pitching a complete-game shutout for the Twins. New London scored two runs in the top of the first, but Seth Miller then pitched six shutout innings before New London scored again. The Twins added four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Ryan Hess, Paul, and Schutz had two hits each for Paynesville. Mike Thompson had four hits for New London (2-2). This week, the Pirates will host Regal at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at the high school field. Four Pirates - Steve Barten, Haag, Miller, and Olmscheid - will play in the Cornbelt All Star Game on Friday night in Bird Island. The Pirates will also host Sacred Heart at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

Lake Henry 15, Roscoe 0
The Lakers (7-0 in league) scored two runs in the first, four in the second, four in the fourth, and five in the eighth, while shutting out the Rangers in Lake Henry on Sunday. Shortstop Doug Fuchs fields a grounder for Lake Henry on Sunday. Fuchs hit a three-run homer and and RBI single and ptiched two innings of hitless relief. He is one of five all stars for the Lakers this year. Jeff Schmitz hit a two-run homer in the second inning for the Lakers, and Doug Fuchs hit a three-run homer to left in the fourth inning. Fuchs also had an RBI single in the first inning, as did Adam Kampsen. Kampsen also singled home a run in the fourth inning. Ryan Wuertz hit a two-run single in the second inning and then scored on Schmitz's homer to right. Joe Liebl's two-run double highlighted the Lakers' five-run eighth inning. Mike Stalboerger pitched seven innings, and Fuchs pitched two innings to combine for a four-hit shutout for the Lakers. This week, the Stearns County All Star Game will be held on Friday night in Elrosa. (See below.) Lake Henry will play at St. Martin on Saturday and will host Farming on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Roscoe will play at St. Martin on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Roscoe 6, Richmond 5 With the game tied 5-5, Leyendecker led off with a single, Justin Mackedanz was hit by a pitch, and Brent Heinen hit a bunt single while trying to sacrifice. With the bases loaded and no one out, Richmond got a strikeout, but Leyendecker scored on a passed ball. Richmond had taken a 5-0 lead, but the Rangers tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Leyendecker and Heinen had two RBIs each in that rally. Heinen pitched nine innings to earn the victory, allowing only one earned run. Paynesville native Jeremy Glenz pitched for Richmond and took the loss.

St. Martin 13, Meire Grove 2
St. Martin (7-1 in league) remained a half game behind Lake Henry in the Stearns County South. The Martins scored six runs on four hits and two errors in the seventh inning. Ken Arceneau and Josh Harrison each had two-run singles in the winning rally. Arceneau finished the game with four RBIs. He also combined with Nathan Schlangen to pitch six innings of shutout relief. Schlangen earned the pitching victory by throwing the final three innings. This week, St. Martin will play an exhibition game at Avon on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Martins will host Lake Henry on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and they will host Roscoe on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
