Strong pitching boosts softball team this spring |
Junior Kim Hess (below left) earned All Conference honors in softball for the third straight season, and junior Val Callenius (below right) earned All Conference honors in softball for the first time this season.
Junior catcher Ashley Spanier earned honorable mention honors in the All Conference voting. She hit .267 with an on base percentage of .333. The Bulldogs comprised a 7-13 record this year with a lineup that included only one at bat by a senior. The teamÕs pitching was especially strong, compiling a team ERA of 3.38. All three members of the pitching staff Š Callenius, Amber Chevalier, and Leah Spanier, who are all juniors Š had an ERA under 4.00. Callenius had an ERA of 3.14 in 58 innings, Spanier had an ERA of 3.34 in nearly 36 innings, and Chevalier had an ERA of 3.74 in 43 innings. Chevalier led the team with four pitching victories, with Spanier second with two. The Bulldogs yielded 34 fewer runs in 2004 (109) than in 2003 (143). But the Dogs only hit .252 this spring, down from .281 in 2003 and .305 in 2002. And scored only 90 runs, down from 109 last year. In other team awards, voted by the players, sophomore Amanda Skalicky was named the Rookie of the Year and Chevalier was named the Will to Win Athlete.
