Hess named Rookie of the Year |
Kim Hess, a 2005 PAHS grad, has been named Rookie of the Year and the Breakout Player of the Year for the Luther College softball team. Hess, who earned her first letter in softball at Luther, was also named to the second team in the All-Iowa Conference, one of five Norse to be selected to the All Conference team. Hess started 41 games in rightfield for Luther, finishing third on the team with a batting average of .409. She batted one strike right-handed and then batted lefthanded as a slap hitter, trying to hit ground balls and use her speed to beat the throws to first. Defensively, she was credited with 22 putouts, six assists, and no errors. Hess, the daughter of Barb and Dave Hess of Paynesville, is a physical education and health major. She just finished her first year at Luther College, located in Decorah, Iowa. As a team this year, the Norse tied a school record for wins in a single season, posting an overall record of 29-12. They also set season records for shutouts (15), fewest errors (33), most hits (367), batting average (.341), homeruns (31), doubles (62), and fielding percentage (.969). The Norse fell one win away from playing for the Iowa Conference tournament championship. Luther College is a four-year liberal arts school affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Norse compete in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, where they have won a combined 186 team titles in men's and women's sports.
