Seniors end high school careers at section golf meet |
Seniors Justin Bork and Ross Barten ended their high school golf careers at the Section 5A tourney on Tuesday, May 30, at Rich-Springs Golf Course. Bork shot 79, and Barten shot 92, and neither advanced to state. The top team (St. Cloud Cathedral) and the top five individuals (not including Cathedral) advanced to the state meet. Bork came within two strokes of forcing a playoff for the final state spot, carding a seven-over-par round of 79 on the par-72 course. He had a double bogey on his second-to-last hole. "If he would have parred that hole," said coach Ron Fuchs, "he would have been in a playoff at 77." "A 79 is a great score at sections with so many great golfers there," added Fuchs. "Justin deserved to go on to state, but that is the one thing about golf: one hole can make you or break you. I can definitely see Justin golfing at the next level if he wants to work on his game." Only four male golfers from PAHS have qualified for state in golf: Dave Cameron (1971), Bob Loomis (1980), Tom Notch (1989), and Mitchell Mackedanz (2004), with Mackedanz placing fourth. Barten, after one of his best rounds of the year at subsections, when he qualified for sections, finished 15 strokes behind the state qualifiers with his 92. "He just couldn't get anything working at sections," said Fuchs. "I think he may have been pressing a little, and that is something you don't want to do in golf." "Ross, I would say, had the biggest turnaround season on our teams," added Fuchs. "He dropped his scoring average five strokes from last year and deserved to be golfing at sections."
