Pirates continue hot start with 11-1 victory

The Paynesville Pirates continued their hot start in the County Line League with their fourth victory of the spring 11-1 over Norway Lake-Sunburg in seven innings on Sunday.

The Pirates scored five runs in the first inning and nine runs in the first three to beat the Lakers and improve to 4-1 in league and 7-1 overall. The big blast in the first inning was Aaron Bayer's three-run homer.

The Pirates had 17 hits, including five home runs. Bayer had two, as did Pat Mohs. Shannon Olmscheid added a solo shot.

Dan Starken pitched all seven innings to earn the victory for the Pirates. The Pirates also beat St. Martin 9-4 on Wednesday, May 30, in a home exhibition.

The Pirates broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to beat New London-Spicer on Sunday, May 20. The Pirates scored one run in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, two in the seventh to expand their lead to 5-2, and a final tally in the eighth to make the final score 6-2.

Dan Starken pitched a complete game and picked up the victory for the Pirates. He allowed only four hits and struck out seven. The Pirates also benefited from good defensive plays from first baseman Aaron Bayer and right fielder Steve Barten, said manager Dale Hess.

Starken and Barten led the Pirates offensively with two hits including a double, and Bayer also had a double.

Jake Thielen The Martins hit six homers to pound Meire Grove 17-11 on Sunday.

Jesse Thielen led the Martins with three homers. Thielen hit solo shots in the second and fourth and a two-run blast in the eighth.

Steve Lieser, who earned the pitching victory, added a three-run homer in the second, and Joe Winter had a three-run blast in the eighth as well. Sam Rothstein also had a solo homer.

The victory raised the Martins' league record to 4-2. St. Martin is 5-5 overall.

The Martins jumped to a 9-1 lead against Richmond on Saturday. Luke Rothstein hit a three-run homer in the first, and Sam Rothstein added a three-run shot in the second.

When Richmond scored three runs in the fourth to cut into the Martins' lead, St. Martin responded by plating six more runs in the fifth.

The Martins had 16 hits, including four home runs in their league victory. Sam Rothstein had two homers, adding a solo shot in the fifth, and Jesse Thielen hit a solo shot in the second.

Ken Arceneau earned the pitching win with four innings of shutout relief.

Elrosa jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held on to beat the Rangers 11-7 on Sunday in Roscoe.

Elrosa outhit the Rangers 14-6, and the Rangers hurt their cause by committing four errors, which led to three unearned runs for Elrosa. The Rangers benefited from nine Elrosa walks, and Todd Leyendecker hit a three-run homer in the fifth for Roscoe.

Todd Leyendecker Jeff Schmitz's two-out grand slam homer in the eighth gave Lake Henry a 9-7 victory over Roscoe on Saturday and kept the Lakers unbeaten in the Stearns County League. The loss ended the Rangers' two-game winning streak.

Roscoe had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 7-5 lead, but Adam Miller and Chad Spanier singled to start the Laker rally. After a pitching change, Ryan Wuertz walked to load the bases, and Schmitz cleared them with a drive to right-center.

The Lakers scored four unearned runs in the first, on account of three Roscoe errors. The Rangers scored in five consecutive innings, starting in the third, to take the lead. Chris VanderBeek hit a solo homer in the fourth, and Greg Heinen hit a two-run shot in the fifth. The Rangers took the lead with two unearned runs in the sixth.

Roger Wuertz pitched a complete game for Lake Henry for the victory, striking out ten.

A six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Lakers past the Silver Streaks 13-9 on Sunday. Doug Fuchs had a solo homer in the seventh, and Jeff Olmscheid hit a two-run double.

Both teams made it to the state tournament a year ago, and the Lakers - who beat New Munich for the region title - won again.

New Munich made five errors, which led to five unearned runs for Lake Henry. Pat Nathe had two home runs for New Munich. Paul Sand added a three-run homer in the fifth, and Jeff Funk hit a solo homer in the first.

Mike Stalboerger pitched a complete game for the Lakers and earned the victory.
