Dogs place four in top ten at sections |
The Paynesville boys' track team had four top ten finishes at the Section 5A track and field meet last week. Eight Bulldogs competed at the section meet at St. John's University on Wednesday, May 28, but none advanced to the state meet. Senior Riley Flanders turned in the best individual performance, finishing fifth individually in the 3,200-meter run, covering two miles in 10:11.8. The Bulldogs also had two relays that placed in the top five. The 3,200-meter relay - with junior Chad Wyffels, senior Tom Flannigan, Flanders, and senior Milan Virant - finished fourth in 8:31.5. Wyffels, Flannigan, and Virant also ran legs for the Dogs' 1,600-meter relay, with senior Josh Teicher running the other leg. This relay team took fifth in 3:40.1. Virant - one of three Bulldogs to compete in three events at sections - recorded the only other top ten finish for the Bulldogs, running ninth in the 400-meter dash. The Bulldogs, as a team, finished 19th out of 25 schools. Annandale, who beat the Dogs at subsections, was the Section 5A team champ. Senior Riley Flanders led the 3,200-meter run for a couple laps, ending up taking fifth place in Section 5A on Wednesday, May 28 at St. John's. "We have had better days," said coach Darrel Carstens. "It is always a great experience getting to sections, and there were highlights, but I know we could have been better." "It was great for the seniors to end the season at a meet of this caliber, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to coach them. Riley Flanders and Adam Leyendecker, as captains, did great this year and competed very well at sections," added Carstens.
