Minnewaska nips Dogs in baseball 3-1 | ||||||||||||||
Minnewaska scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat the Bulldogs baseball team 3-1 on Tuesday, May 24, in the Dogs' regular-season finale. Two errors by the Bulldogs extended the sixth inning for the Lakers, who loaded the bases and got a two-out, two-run single to break a 1-1 tie and win 3-1. Despite four errors, leading to three unearned runs, coach Brad Skoglund praised the Dogs' defense, which turned three double plays. Junior third baseman turned a 5U/ 5-3 double play in the second inning, and junior Ryan Hess turned two 6-4-3 double plays at second base. The Dogs, however, seemed flat overall, said Skoglund, and were not focused at the plate. The team, as a consequence, hit 14 fly outs and pop outs while getting on top of the ball and grounding out only twice. (The Dogs also struck out three times and made two outs on the bases for their 21 outs.) After a Minnewaska error to start the game, junior Trent Hansen drove home the Dogs' only run with an RBI double. The Dogs took a 1-0 lead without making an out but did not score again, stranding eight baserunners, including four in scoring position. Minnewaska tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring an unearned run on an overthrow at first. The Dogs did recover on the play to throw out another Laker baserunner at home, preserving the 1-1 tie until the sixth inning. With the loss, the Dogs finished the regular season with a record of 13-6. They received the top seed in Subsection 20AA and started their quest to win their fourth straight subsection title with a first-round game against eighth-seeded Kimball on Tuesday. If they beat Kimball, they will play either fourth-seeded Rogers or fifth-seeded Annandale on Wednes-day, June 1, at Maple Lake at 5 p.m. The subsection finals will be held on Thursday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. at Maple Lake. Teams on the other half of the subsection bracket are: second-seeded New London-Spicer; third-seeded ACGC; sixth-seeded Maple Lake; and seventh-seeded Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.
