Homer lifts Martins over Spring Hill | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The St. Martin Martins improved to 6-0 in the Stearns County League South by sweeping a weekend doubleheader, beating Spring Hill 3-2 on a ninth-inning homer on Saturday and crushing Greenwald 13-0 on Sunday. Kenny Arceneau broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday in St. Martin. He hit a two-out homer to left to give the Martins a 3-2 victory over Spring Hill and ended a pitcher's duel between the Chargers' Rick Lieser and Martins' Ryan Nett. St. Martin had taken a 1-0 lead on Sam Rothstein's solo homer in the first inning, but Spring Hill took the lead in the third inning when Jonathan Nietfeld and Aron Welle singled and scored (on an outfield error, two passed balls, and a sacrifice fly). St. Martin's Sam Rothstein slide safely into third base in the sixth inning as Spring Hill's Chris Spanier reaches to catch the ball and shortstop Aron Welle backs up the play. Rothstein, the go-ahead run, was stranded. St. Martin tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning, loading the bases on an error, hit batter, and walk before Luke Rothstein grounded a single to left to plate the tying run. Leftfielder Shawn Schoenberg threw out Nathan Schlangen trying to score the go-ahead run on the play, though Schlangen argued vehemently that he avoided the tag. Lieser and Nett both pitched efficiently on Saturday, both getting ahead in the counts and allowing only four hits apiece. On Sunday, the Martins used a 23-hit attack to score 13 runs, and three St. Martin pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout. The Martins got nine hits in the top of the third to score seven runs and take a 7-0 lead. Schlangen hit two homeruns and pitched five shutout innings to get the win. Josh Harrison and Tim Schaefer pitched four innings of shutout relief for St. Martin. This week, St. Martin will host St. Wendell on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and will host New Munich on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Spring Hill (2-5 in league, 4-5 overall) will play at Farming on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
