Students do well at track meet |
The 2003 Area 7 athletics competition for Special Olympics was held on Tuesday, May 13, in Cold Spring. Six athletes from Paynesville were eligible to compete in this track and field competition. Athletes from Paynesville Area High School were Erica Wander, Yvette Lounsbury, Michael Naujokas, and Katherine Parks. Athletes from Paynesville Area Middle School were Josh Sturtz and Annie Liedman. Athletes are divisioned according to age and skill level. Each athlete competed in one individual running event and one field event. In addition, one relay team competed from Paynesville. The following were the results of the tournament. Erica received a fourth place ribbon for the 200-meter dash. Third-place ribbons went to Yvette for the 200-meter dash, Michael for the 400-meter dash, and Erica for the standing long jump. Katherine earned second place for the 100-meter dash, and Yvette, Annie, and Katherine all earned second place in the standing long jump. Josh took first place in both the 800-meter dash and the running long jump. Also taking first place were Annie for the 50-meter dash and Michael for the standing long jump. The relay team - made up of Michael, Yvette, Erica, and Josh - took second place. Congratulations to all the athletes on a great competition. Special Olympics is a volunteer organization.
