Bulldogs extend winless streak

The Bulldogs softball team lost their sixth straight game on Friday, falling 5-2 to ACGC at home.

ACGC scored two runs in the first and second innings, taking an early 4-1 lead. The Falcons added another run in the fourth inning and beat the Dogs (5-11) 5-2.

Leah Spanier pitching Junior Kayla Mackedanz scored both runs for the Bulldogs. She walked and scored in the bottom of the first and singled and scored in the sixth inning.

Junior Leah Spanier pitched six innings in the Dogs' 16-8 loss to Melrose last week, allowing only five eared runs.

Paynesville had only four hits in the game, one each by junior Amber Chevalier, junior Ashley Karger, Mackedanz, and sophomore Amanda Skalicky.

Junior Val Callenius took the pitching loss for the Dogs. She allowed only five hits to the Falcons in the game but walked six. The Dogs also committed three errors.

This week, the Dogs played at conference-leading LPGE on Monday. The game against the Thunder was scheduled for last week but was postponed due to the weather. The Dogs also hosted Sauk Centre on Tuesday in their last conference game.

On Thursday, the Dogs will host Eden Valley-Watkins at 4:15 p.m.

Next week, the Dogs will start subsection playoffs. Subsection games will be held on Monday, May 24; Tuesday, May 25; and Thursday, May 27. Subsection seedings were scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, and were not available at press time. The subsection schedule will be available online at www.paynes-villearea.com.

Melrose 16, Paynesville 8
The Dogs almost upset Melrose, a conference leader, on Tuesday, May 11, leading 8-6 after five innings, but the Dutchmen rallied with ten runs in their final two at bats to win 16-8.

After Melrose took a 5-0 lead in their first three at bats, the Dogs score eight runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take an 8-6 lead.

Junior Katie Nelson tripled to right, scoring two runs, in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score at 6-6. Junior Kim Hess followed with a triple to left-center to give the Dogs a 7-6 lead. Hess came around to score to give the Dogs an 8-6 lead.

Callenius, ninth grader Chelsey Kalkbrenner, and Skalicky all singled and scored in the third inning for Paynesville. Hess also scored for the Dogs (2-6 in the WCC North) in the fourth.

But Melrose (7-2 in the WCC North), aided by several Paynesville errors, scored five runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead 11-8 and scored five more in the top of the seventh to win 16-8.
