Girls place fourth at Benson in tune-up for state true team |
The Paynesville girls' track team placed fourth at Benson on Tuesday, May 11, with a short-handed squad. The Benson meet was one of the team's last preps before the state true team meet on Saturday in Blaine. The Dogs will also compete at the conference meet on Thursday at Long Prairie. Sophomore Tara Schmidt led the Dogs by winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at Benson. She also placed second in the 400-meter dash and third in the long jump. Ninth grader Kacy Nehowig had the next highest finish for the Dogs, placing second in the 3,200-meter run. Double placers for Paynesville were senior Peggy Thompson (seventh in the discus and eighth in the shot put); junior Brittany Lieser (fourth in the shot put and sixth in the high jump); and sophomore Ashley Lieser (sixth in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles). Both Thompson and Brittany Lieser set personal bests in the shot put. Ninth grader Tanis Beireis also set a personal best in the pole vault, clearing eight feet, to place third. The Dogs were without junior Kendra Johnson (sick) and senior Jessica Paul (injured) at the meet. In addition, six girls competed at the junior high meet instead of the varsity meet that day. "We were really short-handed," said coach Dave Randgaard. "We did pretty well with what we had." The Bulldogs had a meet at Maple Lake scheduled for Thursday but it was cancelled due to the weather. This week, the team has two big meets. They will compete in the conference meet at LPGE on Thursday, starting at 3 p.m. And they will compete at the state true team meet on Saturday in Blaine.
