Dogs split softball doubleheader with LPGE | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs softball team split a home doubleheader with LPGE on Friday, dropping the first game in extra innings 5-4 but rebounding to beat the Thunder 10-4 in the second game. LPGE, the defending conference champs, fell a half game behind St. Cloud Cathedral in the conference race with the loss. The Dogs improved to 5-4 (good for third place) in the WCC North (with one game left) but now trail Cathedral by a game and a half and LPGE by a game in the conference standings. The Dogs, who would have passed LPGE in the conference standings with a sweep, rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the first game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but LPGE won the game in the top of the eighth with a walk and two hits. Senior Kim Hess slides home safely as the Dogs beat LPGE 10-4 in the second game of their doubleheader on Friday. Hess went six for seven in the two games and scored five runs. Trailing 4-1, the Dogs got a leadoff double from senior Kim Hess in the sixth inning, a walk to junior Amanda Skalicky, and an RBI double by senior Val Callenius. Skalicky and Callenius then scored on ground outs to tie the game. The Dogs had two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh but could not plate the winning run. They went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth. LPGE had broken a 1-1 tie with an unearned run in the fifth inning and then expanded that 2-1 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, again aided by a Bulldog error. The Dogs had scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Hess singled, stole second, and scored on a double by Skalicky. LPGE tied the score with a run on two hits in the second inning. The Dogs jumped ahead in the second game in the bottom of the first when Hess tripled to start the game and scored. (The Dogs's game with LPGE, scheduled for Thursday, April 26, was reschuled as a double-header in Paynesville on Thursday. Then it was moved to Friday due to more inclement weather. In the doubleheader, Paynesville was home for the first game, and LPGE was home for the second.) The Dogs broke open the game by scoring five runs in the third inning and then another four in the fourth. Hess started both rallies with leadoff singles. Senior Ashley Spanier had an RBI double in the third, when LPGE made two errors to help the Dogs. Skalicky had an RBI double and Callenius an RBI single in the fourth, when LPGE made another key error. Junior Allyson Klenke slides safely into second on a steal attempt while dislodging the softball from the LPGE fielder LPGE scored two runs in the bottom of the third, temporarily making the score 6-2 and another two in the bottom of the sixth, making the final 10-4. The Dogs (now 10-6 overall) played their last conference game at Sauk Centre on Tuesday. On Thursday, they will host Kimball. Next week, the Dogs will start subsection playoffs with a game on Monday, May 23, expected to be a home first-round game. (Seedings were not complete when this edition went to Press.) If the Dogs win, the subsection semifinals would be held on Tuesday, May 24, at Loretto.
