Bulldogs beat Cathedral 3-1 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Junior Adam Kampsen (pictured below) pitched a one-hitter, started a two-run first-inning rally, and hit a solo homerun as the Bulldogs defeated state-rated St. Cloud Cathedral 3-1 last week. With the road victory, the Dogs evened their conference series with the Crusaders, who beat the Dogs 9-8 in April in Paynesville. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning as five consecutive batters reached base. The Kampsen brothers - Adam and Josh - started the rally with two-out singles. Sophomore Mike Mueller walked to load the bases, and junior Chad Stang drove in the first run with a bases-loaded walk. Sophomore Justin Butkofski drove in the second run with a single. The Crusaders scored their only unearned run in the bottom of the first on a routine grounder. But three throwing errors - at first, at second, and at third - allowed the Crusader batter to score on the play. Coach Brad Skoglund likened that play to a snowball fight. "The kids played really well, except for one play," he said. Kampsen had a no-hitter going until Cathedral's leadoff hitter singled in the sixth inning. He pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and no earned runs. "He threw great," said Skoglund. "Adam threw an excellent game." Kampsen also hit a solo homerun in the fifth inning for the Bulldogs' third run. For the game, he had three hits. The Bulldogs are now 4-4 in the conference and 8-5 overall. This week, they played away games at Benson and at LPGE on Monday and Tuesday. They will host Sauk Centre in their final conference game on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (Their game against BBE, scheduled for Thursday night, has been cancelled.) The Bulldogs were also scheduled to play ACGC on Friday but that game has been postponed.

Melrose 6, Paynesville 3 The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the third inning, but the Dutchmen responded with a three-run fourth inning and led the rest of the way. In the third, junior rightfielder Adam Hemmesch and senior second baseman Russ Leyendecker singled.
