Boys' golf team takes 11th place at Benson meet |
The Bulldogs boys' golf team placed 11th in an 18-hole, 20-team meet at Benson on Saturday. Junior Mitchell Mackedanz shot a four-over-par 76 and finished tied for seventh overall at the meet, which had over 100 golfers. Mackedanz eagled his first hole. Sophomore Justin Bork shot 85, sophomore Ross Barten shot 88, and seventh grader Zach Fuchs shot 94 to complete the Dogs' team score. The Dogs averaged just over 85 strokes per man for their four-man team total. At 343, the Dogs were just one stroke out of ninth place. Earlier last week, the Dogs finished sixth at a conference meet at Melrose on Tuesday, May 4. Mackedanz led the team again, firing a one-over-par round of 37 to finish tied for second, one stroke behind medalist honors. Bork shot 43, Fuchs shot 46, and Barten shot 47 to complete the Dogs' team score. At 173, the Dogs finished sixth at the meet, three strokes behind sixth-place Melrose and six behind fifth-place St. Cloud Cathedral. Albany won the meet with a four-man total of 153, averaging just over 38 strokes per man. LPGE was second at 158, also averaging less than 40 strokes per player. Despite improvement this year, the Dogs are still in sixth place in the overall conference standings. With seven points, they are one point behind Melrose. "The boys' team is having a hard time taking that next step," said coach Todd Knudsvig. "We have improved, but we have a way to go to be more competitive in the conference." This week, the Dogs played at Long Prairie on Tuesday. They will play at Sauk Centre on Saturday in a nonconference meet, and they will play at Albany on Monday, May 17.
