Crusaders tip Dogs in softball | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs softball team dropped to 3-4 in the conference after losing a hard-fought battle against the St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders 7-6 on Thursday. Starting well, the Dogs scored six runs in the first four innings. The Crusaders, however, were never far behind, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to stay in the game. Cathedral made a key pitching change in the fifth to end the Dogs' scoring streak. The Crusaders scored two runs in the top of the sixth on a Bulldog error to tie the game 6-6 and scored another run in the seventh to take a one-run lead. Unable to rally late in the game, the Dogs lost 7-6. "We played pretty well," said sophomore Ashley Spanier. "Now we just need to cut down the errors." Sophomore Val Callenius pitched a one-hitter as the Bulldogs beat Albany 11-1 in five innings last week. The Dogs outhit the Crusaders 9-8 but committed six errors. Senior Ashley Mackedanz had a great day at the plate for the Dogs, going 3-3 with an RBI triple in the first. Sophomore Kayla Mackedanz had two hits, and sophomore Valerie Callenius showed off her long-ball hitting ability in the second inning, hitting an inside-the-park homerun. According to coach Tim Woehler, the Dogs have been improving each game and playing good ball, but now just need to take the next step and show their toughness in situations like this. This week, the Dogs traveled to Freeport to take on the Melrose Dutchmen on Tuesday and LPGE will come to town on Thursday. The Dogs will also host BBE on Monday, May 12, and will travel to Sauk Centre on Tuesday, May 13.
