Dogs face tough pitching at tourney

The Bulldogs softball team was shut out by Class AA schools at a tournament at Rocori on Saturday. Rocori beat the Dogs 1-0, and Monticello beat them 6-0 in the three-team round-robin tourney.

Junior Val Callenius pitched a complete game for Paynesville against Rocori, allowing only four hits and one unearned run. The Spartans broke the scoreless tie with an unearned run in the fourth inning, the only run they needed.

Val pitching The Bulldogs managed two hits and had only two runners reach second base and no one got to third against Rocori. Junior Kim Hess singled in the first inning for Paynesville, and junior Ashley Spanier singled in the third inning for the Bulldogs.

Junior Val Callenius allowed only one run in the Bulldogs' 1-0 loss to Rocori on Saturday.

Against Monticello, the Dogs also had only two hits, again by Hess and Spanier. Callenius pitched well, but Monticello scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn a 2-0 lead into a 6-0 win.

This week, the Dogs (5-7) played at Albany on Tuesday. They will play at St. Cloud Cathedral on Thursday. Next week, the Dogs will host Melrose on Tuesday, May 11.

The Dogs have also added another game for the varsity and junior varsity against EV-W on Thursday, May 20, at 4:15 p.m. in Paynesville.

Paynesville 7, Sauk Centre 1
The Bulldogs earned their second conference win on Thursday, beating Sauk Centre on the road 7-1.

The Dogs beat the Streeters despite being outhit 12-9.

Junior Amber Chevalier pitched a complete game, allowing only one run and scattering a dozen hits.

The Dogs built a 6-0 lead before the Streeters scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Kayla Mackedanz gave the Dogs the lead by hitting a solo homer in the first inning. In the third, Chevalier, ninth grader Chelsey Kalkbrenner, and junior Kim Hess led off the inning with consecutive hits and all came around to score. Mackedanz drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning to drive in another run.

In the fifth inning, Hess walked, and junior Ashley Spanier singled, and both scored to make it 6-0.

After Sauk Centre scored, Mackedanz singled and scored in the seventh inning.

The win raised the Dogs' record in the West Central Conference North to 2-3.

LPGE's Amanda Johnson threw a one-hitter, as the Thunder beat the Bulldogs 6-1 in Paynesville on Tuesday, April 27.

Junior Kim Hess walked, stole second and third, and scored in the first inning as the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead, but the Dogs only got one hit, a single by junior Leah Spanier in the fifth inning.

Johnson did walk six batters, but she limited the Dogs to only one hit and one run.

Melrose 13, Paynesville 5
Melrose beat the Bulldogs 13-5 in Melrose in a make-up game on Monday, April 26.

The Dutchmen built an 8-1 lead through four innings and held on to beat the Dogs, who had only three hits. The Dogs rallied to score four runs in the sixth inning, getting hits from juniors Kim Hess and Leah Spanier and also taking advantage of a walk and two Melrose errors.

Spanier had two hits for the Dogs, and Hess scored two runs.

In addition to ten hits, Melrose was helped by six Paynesville defensive errors.
