Errors cost Bulldogs in conference losses | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs gave up four runs in the first inning and were never able to catch up against Sauk Centre in a conference game in Paynesville on Friday. Paynesville scored two runs in the first inning to narrow Sauk Centre's lead by two, but the Mainstreeters scored three more runs in the second inning and never trailed. Senior Jen Habben launches a triple to right against Sauk last Friday. She had three triples and six RBIs. In the third inning, senior Kelli Heinen hit a single down the third base line and was brought home on a triple by senior catcher Jen Habben to make the score 7-3. Great defensive plays by the Bulldogs kept Sauk Centre scoreless in the fourth inning. A Sauk Centre runner at first base was taking a big lead, so Habben threw down to first base and junior Ann Stalboerger tagged out the runner for the first out of the inning. Junior Ashley Mackedanz in left field threw home to Habben to tag out a Streeter runner trying to score for the third out of the inning. However, Sauk Centre scored two more runs in the sixth inning when the Bulldogs committed three errors. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the sixth but still trailed 9-5. Senior Lisa Hemingson hit a double that scored senior Laurie Barten. In the bottom of the seventh, senior Heather Roos started off the inning with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on ninth grader Kim Hess' single. But that was the Bulldogs' only run of the inning. The Dogs outhit the Streeters 10-7 but stranded 13 runners on base while committing four errors. As the second half of the season approaches, coach Tim Woehler said, "We need to start playing more consistent ball if we hope to meet the goals we set at the beginning of the season." The Bulldogs hosted Renville County West in a nonconference game on Tuesday. They will host Melrose on Thursday and will travel to St. Cloud to play Cathedral on Friday. Next week, the Bulldogs will host Albany on Tuesday, May 7. All games start at 4:30 p.m.
