The Bulldogs baseball team defeated the top-ranked team in the state 5-4 in dramatic fashion for their first conference win of the season on Monday, April 22. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead against St. Cloud Cathedral and then held on in the seventh, as centerfielder Jeremy Fuchs threw out the tying run at the plate to end the game. The Crusaders won the Class A title last year and were ranked first in the state to start the year. It was their first loss of the season. Coach Brad Skoglund called it an outstanding win for the team. "It was nice to see our kids come back in the fifth inning to take the lead and hang on for victory," he said. The Bulldogs rallied from deficits of 2-0, 3-1, and 4-3 to win their first conference game of the season. With one out in the fifth inning, senior Wes Lieser drew a walk, sophomore Adam Kampsen singled, and senior Nic Fuchs walked to load the bases. One run scored on junior Josh Krupke's ground out, and the winning run scored on a Cathedral error. The Bulldogs scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. Krupke singled in Kampsen for the Dogs' first run in the second. Lieser brought home junior Josh Kampsen with a single in the third. And senior Ryan Schneider had an RBI single, scoring Fuchs in the fourth. On the hill, Josh Kampsen pitched all seven innings to earn the victory for the Bulldogs. "Josh Kampsen threw strikes and he kept Cathedral off balance with his curve ball," said Skoglund. "Josh showed a lot of poise in pitching in his first varsity ball game." The Bulldogs played at Sauk Centre on Tuesday. They will play at Melrose on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., will host ACGC on Friday night at 7 p.m., and will play at Albany on Tuesday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m.
