Minnewaska tops boys at home meet |
The Paynesville Bulldogs boys' track team finished a close second at a five-team home meet on Thursday. The Dogs were beaten by eight points by Minnewaska. The Bulldogs collected seven first-place finishes, including three by senior Tommy Flannigan (pictured at right in the 3200-meter relay), two by senior Riley Flanders, and two by junior Lee Fuchs-Thielen. Flannigan won the high jump and the 800-meter run and also ran a leg in the Dogs' winning 3,200-meter run (with sophomore Matt Mehr, senior Fred Stock, and junior Greg Price). Flannigan also ran a leg on the Dogs' 1,600-meter relay, which placed second. Other members of that relay were junior Chad Wyffels, senior Josh Teicher, and Stock. Flanders pulled a difficult double victory in the mile run and the two-mile run. Sophomore Chris Utsch placed third in each while sophomore Matt Mehr was second in the two-mile run, where the Dogs swept the top three places. Fuchs-Thielen won the long jump with a leap of 20' 3" and the triple jump with a leap of 39' 5". He also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and ran a leg in the 400-meter relay, which placed fourth. Stock placed second in the triple jump behind Fuchs-Thielen. Wyffels placed in three individual events as well as running a leg on a runner-up relay. He was third in the 300-meter hurdles, fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, and fifth in the triple jump. Junior Troy Fuchs-Thielen was fourth in the long jump and fourth in the high jump. "We had some excellent performances and again some personal bests," said coach Darrel Carstens, "but we will need to become a team-oriented group if we want to have any chance in the conference next week." This week, the Bulldogs will compete in the true team sectional at Holdingford on Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m. Junior Lee Fuchs-Thielen (right) hands the baton to senior Ryan Glenz during the 400-meter relay at the home track meet on Thursday.
