Bulldogs take fourth twice in opening meets |
The Bulldogs girls' golf team placed fourth in two conference meets last week to open their spring season. The Bulldogs placed fourth at Litchfield on Tuesday, April 16, and at Angushire in St. Cloud on Thursday, April 18, in West Central Conference North meets hosted by Litchfield and St. Cloud Cathedral respectively. Senior Sally Heitke led the Dogs at both meets, shooting a six-over-par 41 at Litchfield and a 46 at Angushire. Heitke was third at Litchfield and tied for sixth at Angushire. Paynesville's top four golfers totalled 193 at Litch, with Heitke being joined by senior Maria Janotta and sophomore Jena Spaulding with 50s. Sophomores Amanda Glenz and Heather Fuchs and eighth grader Amber Jensen all shot 52s. Litchfield won their home meet with a score of 182. Sauk Centre senior Jackie Beste, the defending Class A state champion, set a course record on the back nine at the Litchfield course with a three-under-par 32. Beste had five birdies and two bogeys in earning medalist honors at the meet. Beste also was the medalist at Angushire, firing an even-par round of 35 and leading Sauk Centre to the team title. Sauk Centre's team total was 182, which edged Albany by a stroke. Paynesville tied with Cathedral on Thursday at 197. Spaulding shot a 49, Janotta a 50, and Glenz and Jensen 52s. The second 52 gave the Bulldogs fourth place on a tie breaker, since the Crusaders' fifth golfer shot 58. This week, the girls' team played at Sauk Centre on Tuesday. They will play at Albany on Thursday and at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on Tuesday, April 30.
