Baseball team starts season with two wins | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Bulldogs baseball team - ranked #2 in Class A this spring - opened their season with two wins last week. The Dogs defeated Albany - ranked #13 in Class A - 4-2 in their season opener on Thursday, gaining their first conference win of the spring. The Bulldogs built a 4-0 lead through five innings behind the shutout pitching of senior righthander Josh Kampsen. The Dogs only had five hits for the game but made them all count. Every player who got a hit either came around to score or drove in a run with it. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second inning when sophomore Mike Mueller singled, stole second, and scored on a single by sophomore first baseman Justin Butkofski. In the third, junior Adam Kampsen doubled with one out and scored on a single by Mueller. Senior righthander Josh Kampsen pitched a complete game against Albany and also hit a key two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Dogs ended their scoring in the fifth inning when Adam Kampsen walked with two outs and scored on a two-run homer to left by his brother Josh. Albany scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning to make the final 4-2. The Huskies loaded the bases with a double, an error, and a walk, but a key defensive play helped the Bulldogs. An Albany runner tried to tag from third on a short fly to center, but senior centerfielder Josh Krupke threw a one-hop strike to catcher John Hemingson, a ninth grader, who tagged out the runner for a double play. The next Albany batter - Nathan Beier from St. Martin - doubled home two runs, but the Dogs got the final out on a grounder to win 4-2. This week, the Bulldogs hosted St. Cloud Cathedral - ranked #5 in the state - on Tuesday afternoon. They will play next at Melrose on Tuesday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m.
