Dogs open track season indoors at SCSU |
The Bulldogs boys' track team opened its season with an indoor meet at St. Cloud State University on Saturday. No team scores were kept, as the Bulldogs battled individually in the 14-team meet. "It was a decent start for the Dogs," said coach Darrel Carstens. "This was great, tough competition with 11 Class AA schools and three tough Class A schools." The Bulldogs had eight top-ten finishes in their first meet, led by the 400-meter dash, where junior Chad Wyffels was third and senior Tommy Flannigan was seventh. Senior Riley Flanders was sixth in the 800-meter dash, junior Troy Fuchs-Thielen was ninth in the pole vault, and senior Milan Virant was tenth in the long jump. The Dogs also had three top-ten finishes in relays. Their 1,600-meter relay - Flannigan, junior Scott Millner, Virant, and Wyffels - was sixth, as was their spring medley relay - junior Lee Fuchs-Thielen, senior Ryan Glenz, senior Josh Teicher, and Flanders. The Dogs' 400-meter relay was tenth. The Bulldogs lost a dozen track members to graduation last year, including Class A triple jump champion Josh Trees and state participants Nic Glenz, Adam Schaefer, and Ryan Whitcomb. This year's team includes seven seniors - Riley Flanders, Tom Flannigan, Ryan Glenz, Adam Leyendecker, Freddie Stock, Milan Virant, and Josh Teicher - and seven juniors - Chris Berg, Lee Fuchs-Thielen, Troy Fuchs-Thielen, Ben Lingl, Scott Millner, Jon Scheierl, and Chad Wyffels. Other team members are sophomore Casey Kussatz, sophomore Matt Mehr, sophomore Chris Utsch, ninth grader Aaron Bachman, ninth grader Greg Price, and ninth grader Keith Klein. "We are short on depth, but are working for the conference meet," said Carstens, who returns as head coach. He will be assisted by Kyle Nehowig and Todd Spanier, who are splitting the assistant coaching position. They are replacing long-time assistant coach Scott George, who passed away earlier this month. This week, the Bulldogs will participate in another indoor meet at St. John's University on Saturday starting at 6 p.m.
