Cagers lose regular-season finale to ACGC | ||||||||||||
The Bulldogs boys' basketball team lost their final regular season game on Friday night at ACGC 70-68 to the Falcons. The Bulldogs, who led by as many as ten points, led until the fourth quarter, when ACGC rallied for the victory. The Bulldogs built a 35-27 lead at halftime, getting 13 first-half points from senior Doug Mages. But the Falcons (17-6), coached by former PHS standout Terry Miller (Class of 1986), rallied in the second half. They outscored the Bulldogs 20-15 in the third quarter, cutting the Dogs' lead to three, and then outscored the Dogs 23-18 in the final quarter, winning 70-68. While the Dogs shot over 50 percent from the floor, they went 0 for 11 from three-point range. ACGC, on the other hand, made six three-pointers. The Bulldogs got balanced scoring from four players, who scored all but two points for Paynes-ville. Mages led the team with 21 points and ten rebounds. Ninth grader Cory Nietfeld added 20 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Adam Kampsen had 13 points, and senior Adam Hemmesch had 12. The Bulldogs, now 6-15, will play in the first round of the District 20 playoffs on Thursday at NL-S. The Dogs, seeded sixth, face third-seeded NL-S in the first round. The Dogs will try to avenge a 70-62 loss to the Wildcats from late February. If the Bulldogs win their first-round game, they would play in the district semifinals on Saturday, March 13, at 4 p.m. in Litchfield. In the second round, the Bulldogs could face second-seeded EV-W.
