Stars end season in section quarterfinals | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team ended their season in the section quarterfinals on Saturday, losing to top-seeded Elk River, rated #2 in the state, 14-1. The Stars were outshot 63-12, with senior goalie Trish Wendlandt making 49 saves. Wendlandt said the Stars have a promising team but they still need to improve to compete with teams as good as Elk River. Sophomore Marie Omann scored the only goal for the Stars, seeded eighth, in the first period after Elk River took a 5-0 lead. Eighth grader Abbie Rhoda assisted on the goal. The Stars, who finished their season with a record of 10-11-2, reached the section quarterfinals by beating Sartell/Sauk Rapids 5-4 on Thursday night in Paynesville. Senior goalie Trish Wendlandt makes a save last week. In a season-ending loss to state-rated Elk River on Saturday, she made 49 saves. The Stars withstood a third-period rally by Sartell/Sauk Rapids to win their opening section playoff game. The Stars took a 3-0 lead into the third period, but Sartell/Sauk Rapids scored four goals in the third period. Sophomore forward Amber Schulzetenberge completed a hat trick for the Stars by scoring two goals in the third period. After Sartell/Sauk Rapids tied the game with three goals in the first three and a half minutes of the third period, Schulzetenberge gave the Stars the lead again with a goal a minute later. Sartell/Sauk Rapids, seeded ninth, tied the game again, at 4-4, with another goal a minute later. Schulzetenberge scored the game-winning goal with just over five minutes left in the game. She also scored the Stars' first goal in the first period. Sophomore Allie Stalboerger and Rhoda scored goals in the second period for the Stars. Stalboerger finished with four points for the Stars, assiting on all three of Schulzetenberge's goals and scoring one herself. Eighth grader Abbie Rhoda scores a goal in the second period against Sartell/Sauk Rapids last week, beating the goalie with a wrist shot. The Stars had three seniors on the team this year, including two from Paynesville, senior goalie Trish Wendlandt and senior forward Bari Behling. Of their 18 varsity players, 15 should return next year. Of these, 14 were sophomores or younger this year.

The Stars beat Litch/D-C twice this year. They won 8-1 in January. Sophomore forward Amber Schulzetenberge scored two goals in the first period as the Stars took a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Marie Omann scored the only goal in the second period, extending the Stars' lead to 3-1, and the Stars scored four goals in the third period. Schulzetenberge completed her hat trick with a goal in the third. Sophomore Allie Stalboerger, senior Bari Behling, and Omann also tallied goals for the Stars in the third period. The Stars outshot Litch/D-C 61-17. Litch/D-C's goalie made 54 saves to make the score as close as it was.
