Cagers clinch second-place conference finish | ||||||||||||
Winning at St. Cloud Cathedral on Friday night, the Bulldogs girls' basketball team clinched a second-place finish in the West Central Conference North. The Dogs, now 7-2 in conference play, swept the two-game season series from Cathedral, winning 52-42 on Friday. The Dogs trail only undefeated Albany, whom they played on Tuesday in their final conference game, in the WCC North. Cathedral took an early lead in a somewhat ragged game on Friday, leading 10-5 after one quarter. But the Bulldogs outscored them 17-5 in the second quarter and took a 22-15 lead at the half. They extended that lead to eight after three quarters and to ten at the end. While the two teams combined for 56 points in the first three quarters, they scored 38 in the fourth quarter alone, but the Dogs outscored the Crusaders 20-18 and won by ten. The Bulldogs shot only 17 of 54 from the floor and committed 21 turnovers, but they outrebounded the Crusaders 47-35 and they held the Crusaders to 14 field goals, though five were three-pointers. Both teams faced foul trouble. Three starters fouled out for Cathedral, while three starters for the Bulldogs had four fouls but did not foul out. Only four players scored for Cathedral and three of them fouled out of the game. Senior Amanda Glenz scored 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and blocked three shots for the Dogs. Junior guard Kim Hess scored 12 points, snagged nine rebounds, dished six assists, and had five steals. Junior Brittany Lieser scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and junior Rachael Wendlandt snared 10 rebounds. The Dogs played their only game for this week on Tuesday at Albany. Next week, they will play their last regular season game on Thursday, Feb. 26, when they host ACGC.
