Gymnasts finish seventh at conference meet |
The gymnastics season is dwindling down for the Paynesville Bulldogs, who traveled to New London on Saturday for the West Central Conference meet. The meet did not end well for the Bulldogs, who finished seventh out of seven teams. The final scores were: Melrose 146.2, Benson 135.2, New London-Spicer 128.525, LPGE 119.925, Sauk Centre 118.9, Morris 117.0, and Paynesville 113.050. As a team, the Bulldogs were fourth in the vault, sixth in the uneven bars, and seventh in both the balance beam and the floor exercise. At this meet, All-Conference winners were recognized. Eighth grader Kacy Nehowig was the only Bulldog to receive All-Conference honors. Sophomore Ashley Karger missed honorable mention by 7.5 points. Despite finishing seventh, the Bulldogs had a day filled with personal bests. Sophomore Ashley Spanier had two personal bests. One was on vault and the other was on floor, where she performed back handsprings for the first time this year. Senior Mandy Mayer did two handspring fulls on vault for the first time this season and received her personal best score there. The Nelson sisters, sophomore Katie and ninth grader Kayla, both received personal bests on the floor exercise. Kayla performed back tucks in her routine for the first time this season, which may have helped her score. Eighth grader Brittney Spanier also had her personal best for the season on vault. The Bulldogs will compete at sections on Saturday at Melrose. This meet will start at 5 p.m.
