The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team played their last two games of the season last week, beating Sartell/Sauk Rapids 2-1 in the opening round of sections before falling to top-seeded Elk River 7-0 in the quarterfinals. On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the Stars, the #9 seed, scored two goals in the second period to beat Sartell/Sauk Rapids, the #8 seed in St. Cloud. Ninth graders Marie Omann and Ashley Artez scored the two goals for the Stars, and junior Trisha Wendtlandt made 21 saves in goal. Unfortunately, playing top-seeded Elk River was a different story for the Stars, who were outshot 45-7. Wendtlandt made 38 saves. "We had a good run with the first win against Sartell, but we ran into a great hockey team and it showed us what we need to inprove in the years to come," commented coach Kirby St. John. The River Lakes girls team ended the season with a record of 9-13-2, an improvement over last year "I think the girls had a great season. We saw great improvement as a team as well as individually," said St. John. "I am looking forward for the years to come to see more improvement every year."
