Stars avenge loss to Alexandria in OT | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team fought their way for their third victory of the season on Thursday. The Stars scored in overtime to beat Alexandria 3-2, turning the tables on the Cardinals, who beat the Stars 3-2 in overtime in December. The host Cardinals started strong by scoring two goals in the first period. But the Stars got one goal in the period, too. Senior Julia Mehr passed to senior forward Karen Hafner who skated with the puck into the Stars' offensive zone. Hafner passed the puck to senior Laurie Barten, who scored with 29 seconds left in the first period. Alexandria held on to their 2-1 lead until just over two minutes were left in the third period. Junior forward Marena Lewis scored a goal off a rebound to tie the game 2-2 and send it to overtime. The River Lakes were determined not to let Alexandria score and win again, like the last time they played. "The girls really wanted to win this game. They worked their forecheck wonderfully and kept the puck down in Alex's zone for over five minutes," said Stars assistant coach Jim Caron. On a power play, junior defenseman Marya Losinksi skated the length of the ice and scored the game-winning goal for the Stars. The Stars ended the regular season with a record of 3-18-1. "The regular season ended on a positive note when we edged Alex3-2 in overtime,"Ęsaid head coach Tom Petroski. "We're hoping the momentum from that game will carry over into the playoffs, where we face Sartell/Sauk Rapids, a team that we have played competitively in the past." They opened the section playoffs last night against Sartell/Sauk Rapids at the National Hockey Centre in St. Cloud. If they win, they face top-seeded Elk River on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Elk River. The Section 8AA semifinals will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Brainerd.

Both teams were about equal in talent. The Storm outshot the Stars by two and both goalies, Crystal Songetay for River Lakes and Kelsey Baker for Benson/Morris, made 22 saves. Benson/Morris scored first, five minutes into the first period, but the Stars answered back when ninth grader Janile Lewis scored on a pass from senior Jenny Habben. With 11 seconds left in the period, the Storm took the lead when the Stars had some break downs in their defensive coverage. The Stars answered back again in the second period when Barten scored with an assist from senior Anne Bohlman. The Stars and Storm skated hard for the rest of the game, but the River Lakes Stars could not keep Benson/Morris from scoring two more goals in the third period to take a 4-2 win.
