Gymnasts defeat Ortonville for eighth win | ||||||||
The Paynesville gymnasts crushed Ortonville 115.575-109.8 on Friday night on parents' night. The Bulldogs won every event except the floor exercise, where they were just a few tenths behind. Sophomore Ashley Karger placed third in the all around against Ortonville on Friday, helping the Bulldogs to their eighth victory of the year. She also placed fifth in the all-around against Benson last week. Ninth grader Kayla Nelson had a very nice beam routine and earned fifth place. Eighth grader Kacy Nehowig, was able to place first on every event except beam, where senior teammate Mandy Mayer finished first and Nehowig was second. Nobody was even close to Nehowig in the other three events. She finished first in the all-around competition. Mayer had a no-fall beam routine, which helped her break 8.0. Her personal best is now 8.05. She also placed second on bars. Sophomore Ashley Karger had a rough time staying on beam causing her to not place. But she did place fifth on floor, fourth on bars, and third on vault and took third in the all-around competition. Ninth grader Kayla Nelson had a very nice beam routine and earned fifth place. The Bulldogs improved to 8-10 for the season with this victory. This week, the girls will compete in the West Central Conference meet at New London-Spicer on Saturday. The meet begins at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs were unable to beat Benson in any single event, although vault was close. Benson scored 34.35 on the vault, and the Bulldogs scored 33.4. Eighth grader Kacy Nehowig had a good night once again. She did two awesome handspring fulls on vault, which earned her first place and the highest score (9.1) she has ever had on vault. She had a nice, flowing bar routine for second place and placed fifth on floor. But she had a little bit of trouble on beam and did not place. In the all-around competition, she placed third. Sophomore Ashley Karger had two nice vaults that got her fifth place. She also placed fifth in the all-around competition. Senior Mandy Mayer was consistent on beam and bars once again. Although she did not place on bars, she had a continuous routine. Beam went very well for her, where she placed fourth.
