Boys basketball loses to Melrose in overtime

The Paynesville boy’s basketball team took on the Melrose Dutchmen for the second time this season on Thursday, Jan. 28.

The Dutchmen were ranked number 15 in class AA. Paynesville knew that they could play with Melrose, even though they were state-rated.

In the first quarter Paynesville did not shoot the ball well and only scored three points. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the Dutchmen only scored nine points.
The second quarter wasn’t much better for either team. It was also a low scoring quarter.

At halftime the score was 18-11 in favor of the Dutchmen. Paynesville was only down by seven points, something they could definitely come back from.

The third quarter proved this theory when the Bulldogs closed the gap to three points. Many of these points came on free throws.

Paynesville battled with the state-rated team until the very last second. Both teams had their chances to put each other away, but it just didn’t happen.

Melrose made three three-pointers in the fourth quarter to tie the game and put it into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Bulldogs could not get anything going their way. They scored only one point to the Dutchmens’ six.

Paynesville lost this one in overtime 48-43.

Paynesville: 3 8 14 17 1 -43
Melrose: 9 9 10 14 6 -48

Annandale
The Paynesville boy’s basketball team played the Annandale Cardinals in a great sub-section matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Paynesville and Annandale were in a fight for the number one seed in the sub section. Paynesville proved why they should be the ones with a 51-48 win over the Cardinals.

In the first quarter the Bulldogs played well enough to have the lead, but really didn’t take control of the game.

The Bulldogs were having a tough time taking advantage of the zone defense the Cardinals put on in the second quarter, but went to the locker room only down by four points.

In the third quarter Paynesville came out “smoking“ and just pounded the Cardinals, only allowing them five points.

In the fourth quarter Annandale almost came back, but Paynesville kept the lead to the end by making a couple of last second free throws.

Paynesville will more than likely get the number-one seed in the sub-section playoffs with their 51-48 win over the Cardinals.

Paynesville : 13 10 15 13 -51
Annandale : 11 16 5 16 -48
