Stars rally in third period before falling in overtime | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team scored three goals in the last six minutes of regulation to force overtime but lost a nonconference game at Fergus Falls 5-4 on Thursday. The Otters scored midway through overtime to win. The Stars trailed 4-1 after yielding three goals over the first ten minutes of the final period, but rallied to tie the game and force overtime. First, senior defenseman Zach Johnson scored at the six-minute mark, and then sophomore Brett Savelkoul scored two times for the Stars. Savelkoul scored his first goal a minute after Johnson and then scored the tying goal with three and a half minutes to play. Fergus Falls had scored midway through the first period to take a 1-0 lead, but junior Alex Naujokas tied the game for the Stars at 1-1 in the first minute of the second period. Fergus Falls then scored just over a minute into the third period, taking a 2-1 lead, and added two goal over the next nine minutes to build their 4-1 lead. Senior goalie Eric Prowker made 38 saves for the Stars, who were outshot by the Otters 43-25. This week, the Stars (6-15) played at St. Michael-Albertville on Tuesday. They will host Becker-Big Lake at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville on Friday night.

Sartell 5, River Lakes 3
The conference rivals were tied at 2-2 after one period and 3-3 after two periods, but Sartell scored a power-play goal in the first minute of the third period and added a goal later in the final period to win 5-3. Sartell outscored the Stars in the final period despite being outshot 13-7. The Stars outshot Sartell 37-23 for the game, but Sartell's goalie made 34 saves for the Sabres. The Stars answered the Sabres twice in the first period. Sartell scored the first goal, only to be answered by a goal from senior defenseman Zach Johnson, knotting the game at 1-1. When Sartell scored again, senior forward Kurt Peterson answered to tie the game again at 2-2. Sophomore Brett Savelkoul - scoring his first varsity goal - gave the Stars their only lead early in the second period, but Sartell tied the score 3-3 eight minutes later. The loss dropped the Stars to 3-9 in the Central Lakes Conference with two games to play.
