Stars fall to Willmar, in overtime to Sartell | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars girls' hockey team had a pretty rough week, losing two games. The Stars lost to the Willmar Cardinals 5-0 on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and lost 3-2 in overtime to Sartell in Richmond on Thursday, Jan. 23. Junior Trisha Wendlandt was the goaltender for River Lakes against Willmar and made 37 saves. For the Cardinals, Kelly Sykora scored two goals - one in the first period assisted by her sister Megan Sykora and the other in the second to give Willmar a 2-0 lead. Also, Megan Dubal added a goal and an assist for the Cardinals. Against Sartell, the Sabres turned the tables on the Stars. River Lakes had beaten Sartell 3-2 in overtime in December. The same scenario, with a reversed outcome, happened on Thursday. With the game tied 2-2, Sartell's Britney Beck scored a shorthanded goal midway through the eight-minute overtime period. Beck scored two goals for Sartell, including the game winner. For River Lakes, ninth grader Amber Schultzenberg scored a goal and had an assist. Junior Marena Lewis scored the other goal. "We showed improvment since the first time we played them. They just had a few lucky puck bounces," said head coach Kirby St. John. "If we would have been lucky, too, the game would have been very different." The Stars, now 7-12-1 for the season, outshot Sartell 42-17. This week, the Stars played at Benson on Tuesday night. They will play at Alexandria on Thursday in their last regular season game.
