Apollo, Sauk Rapids top River Lakes in conference | ||||||||||||||||||||
A big second period led St. Cloud Apollo to a 7-2 victory over the River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team on Thursday at the River Lakes Arena in Richmond. Apollo turned a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 lead by scoring four goals in just over ten minutes to end the second period. The flurry started with two goals within a minute midway through the period and ended with a goal with four seconds to play in the second period. Junior defenseman Mike Mueller clears the puck for the Stars, who have already exceeded their win total from last year with a record of 8-8. The Stars cut the lead to 6-2 with four minutes to play but got no closer, as Apollo won their second conference game. Scoring for the Stars were junior James Herberg in the first period and senior Chris Knauss in the third period. Herberg also assisted on Knauss' goal. Junior Kevin Braun assisted on both goals. This week, the Stars played Benson/Morris in Richmond on Tuesday. Next week, they will host their last game at the Koronis Civic Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 3, when they play Holy Family Catholic, a private school from Victoria, Minn.

The victory was the second in the Central Lakes Conference for the Storm, and their second overall. They outshot the Stars 51-19. Senior goalie Blake Theisen made 44 saves for the Stars. The Stars' record now is 8-8 overall and 1-5 in the Central Lakes Conference.
