Scott West claims invite title over Dogs |
Four Bulldog wrestlers claimed individual titles at the home invitational on Saturday, but Scott West defeated Paynesville for the team title, 285-241.5. Scott West, rated #7 in Class AA, won its fourth straight title at the Paynesville Invitational.
Senior Sean Glenz improved to 21-0 this season by winning the individual title at 152 at the Paynesville Invitational on Saturday. For a change, the tournament was done in a round-robin fashion this year. Glenz pinned this opponenet in the fourth round and then defeated a state-rated wrestler from Thief River Falls in the final round. The Bulldogs, rated #6 in Class A, led going into the final round, but Scott West had all 14 of its wrestlers going in the last round and 11 won. The Dogs had only eight in action in the final round, and only two won. Senior A.J. Christian (135), senior Sean Glenz (152), and senior Joe Sheridan (119) were undefeated for the Dogs, going 4-0 and claiming first place in their weights. Christian improved to 13-8 with four wins, including two pins and two technical falls. Glenz also recorded two pins, as well as a major decision and a decision in the final, where he handed senior Daniel LeDuc of Thief River Falls, rated #2 at 152 in Class AA, his second loss of the season 6-4. Sheridan won two matches by fall, one by major decision, and by a 3-2 decision in the final at 119. Sophomore Jordan Christian (112) also took first place at his weight, despite losing his final match. Three wrestlers at 112 finished 3-1, but Christian had two pins and a major decision before losing a close 3-1 decision in the final round.
Senior Joe Sheridan lifted his opponent in the final round on Saturday. Sheridan scored a 3-2 decision and finished unbeaten to win the title at 119. Ninth grader Jonathan Kerzman was the only other Bulldog wrestler to place in the top three. He went 2-2 and placed third at 130. This week, the Dogs (13-4 overall, 3-0 in the WCC North) will decide the conference title. They hosted LPGE, Litch, and Trinity School at River Ridge on Tuesday, with the match against LPGE being a conference contest. On Thursday, the Dogs will travel to Sauk Centre for another conference match, and on Friday, they will travel to Minnewaska for a make-up date with the Lakers. This match against Minnewaska was originally scheduled for December but postponed until now. The Lakers, like the Dogs, are undefeated, so far, in the conference.
