Little Falls, Sauk Rapids top River Lakes | ||||||||||||||||||||
Little Falls broke a 1-1 tie with a goal midway through the second period and added a goal early in the third period to beat the River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team 3-1 in Richmond on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Senior center Jamie Paul, with assists from his first-line teammates junior Alex Naujokas and senior Luke Harren, scored for the Stars with just under 10 minutes to play in the second period, tying the game 1-1. Little Falls retook the lead less than three minutes later and scored the only goal of the third period. In the first period, the two teams skated in a scoreless duel for 12 minutes before the Flyers found the net with under five minutes to play. Little Falls outshot the Stars 46-28 with junior goalie Brian Skluzacek making 43 saves for the Stars. This week, the Stars (4-13) hosted St. Cloud Apollo in Richmond on Tuesday night. On Thursday, they will travel to Willmar for a conference game. Next week, the Stars will host Sartell on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Koronis Civic Arena in Paynesville.

Sauk Rapids limited the Stars to 15 shots in the shutout victory. It was the second time this season that the Stars have been shut out. Sauk Rapids scored just over 90 seconds into the first period to take the lead for good. They scored again late in the first period and in the first minute of the second period and then added three goals in the third period. Junior goalie Brian Skluzacek made 45 saves for the Stars.
