Wrestlers take third at Farmington tourney |
The Bulldogs wrestling team won three of four matches and took third place at the Farmington Tourney on Saturday. The Bulldogs beat Faribault 46-24 and Lakeville 37-26, lost to St. Michael-Albertville 56-15, and rebounded to defeat Blue Earth 49-21 for third place. Against Faribault, the Dogs won 10 of the 14 weights, including nine of the first ten matches, building a 43-6 lead. The Dogs got pins from eighth grader Jordan Christian (103), sophomore Joel Kerzman (135), sophomore Sean Glenz (140), and senior Matt Kerzman (160). Sophomore Aaron Bachman added a major decision at 152. Ninth grader Aaron Burris (125), junior Jack Mueller (130), sophomore Keith Klein (145), and senior Pat Utsch (215) won decisions for the Bulldogs. Against Lakeville, the Dogs again led throughout, winning seven of the first ten weights to take a 34-14 lead. When Lakeville rallied late in the match, Pat Utsch recorded a decision at 215 to seal the victory. Sophomore Joe Sheridan and junior Todd Thielen recorded back-to-back pins to open the match for the Bulldogs. Joel Kerzman and Sean Glenz recorded the only other pins for Paynesville, back-to-back again at 135 and 140. Other winners for the Bulldogs were Matt Kerzman with a major decision at 152, Mueller with a decision at 130, and Bachman with a 3-1 overtime decision at 160. Sophomore Aaron Bachman won three of four matches at the Farmington Tournament on Saturday as the Bulldogs placed third. In the semifinals, the Bulldogs were overwhelmed by St. Michael-Albertville, the top-ranked team in Class AA. St. Michael-Albertville's lineup features seven state-ranked wrestlers in Class AA. St. Michael-Albertville won the first five weights and 11 of 14 overall. Joel Kerzman and Sean Glenz recorded back-to-back pins again at 135 and 140, and Pat Utsch won a decision at 189 for the only points for Paynesville. The Bulldogs rebounded to beat Blue Earth 49-21 to take third place. The Dogs won five of the first seven weights and nine of the 13 contested weights, with the teams double forfeiting at 275. Recording pins for Paynesville were Thielen at 112, Mueller at 130, Joel Kerzman at 135, Bachman at 160, junior Josh Tebben at 189, and Utsch at 215. Other winners were Glenz by technical fall at 140, Sheridan by major decision at 103, and Matt Kerzman by decision at 152. For the tournament, Joel Kerzman, Sean Glenz, and Pat Utsch were undefeated, each going 4-0. Winning three matches were Sheridan, Mueller, Matt Kerzman, and Bachman. The Dogs are now 11-6 this year. This week, the Dogs will host their annual invitational tourney on Saturday, Jan. 17, with Dassel-Cokato, Deer River, Minneota, Park Rapids, Paynesville, and Scott West. Four of the six teams are ranked in state. A dual tournament for junior varsity will start at 9:30 a.m., and the individual tournament for the varsity starts at 12 noon.

The Bulldogs won half of the individual matches, but Canby had four pins to none for the Bulldogs. The Dogs led 7-6 and 10-9 before the Lancers got their first two pins to take the lead. Then the Bulldogs won four straight matches from 135-152 to get within 25-23, but Canby got back-to-back pins to end the match, winning 37-23. Senior Pat Utsch opened the match with a major decision at 189 for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Joel Kerzman earned the only other bonus point for the Bulldogs with a major decision at 135. (Canby, on the other hand, earned 16 bonus points, with four pins, a win by forfeit, and a major decision.) Winners by decision for the Dogs were junior Josh Tebben at 215; sophomore Joe Sheridan at 112; sophomore Sean Glenz at 140; sophomore Keith Klein, in overtime, at 145; and senior Matt Kerzman at 152.
