Bulldogs rally to beat Melrose

The Bulldogs girls' basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat Melrose for their second win of the season.

The Dogs got their first conference win of the season by rallying in the second half against the Dutchmen. Melrose led 21-15 at the half, but the Dogs outscored the visitors 30-15 in the second half to win 45-36.

kim The Dogs held Melrose to 11 field goals, including only four in the second half and only one in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, senior guard Kim Hess scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the second half, and sophomore center Kristin Lang added eight points in the second half for the Bulldogs.

Senior Kim Hess - making a shot in the lane in a loss to NL-S last week - led the Dogs to victory against Melrose on Friday, scoring 14 points, grabbing nine rebounds, dishing five assists, and making five steals.

The Bulldogs sealed the game at the free-throw line, scoring their last seven points on free throws, including four by senior Kendra Johnson, two by Hess, and one by junior Ashley Lieser.

"We had a great team effort," said coach Jackie Parsley. "Everyone stepped up and played their role. Kristin (Lang) and Kim (Hess) had great games. Kendra (Johnson) played a great defensive game."

Hess, in addition to her 14 points, had nine rebounds, five assists, and five steals to lead the Dogs in all four categories.

This week, the Dogs (2-8 overall, 1-3 in the West Central Conference North) played at Eden Valley-Watkins on Monday. They will play at Albany on Thursday and will host Sauk Centre next week on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

State-rated New London-Spicer defeated the Dogs 58-39 in Paynes-ville on Tuesday, Jan. 4, but not without a fight.

jumpshot The Dogs trailed by only a dozen points with six minutes to play, 47-35, but the Wildcats closed the game with an 11-4 run to win 58-39.

Senior forward Brittany Lieser led the Dogs against state-rated NL-S last week, making seven shots and scoring 15 points.

"I thought the girls played well," said Parsley. "It was a team effort. NL-S just shot the ball better than we did."

The Wildcats made 24 of 51 shots (47 percent), while the Dogs shot only 33 percent (16 of 49). The Cats were led by senior forward Jessica Heinen, who scored 28 points, including 12 field goals.

The Dogs were led by senior forward Brittany Lieser, who scored 15 points, making seven shots from the field, including a three-pointer.

In the first half, the Dogs rallied from deficits of 9-1 to trail only 14-8 at the end of the first period. They trailed only 16-12 in the second quarter before allowing NL-S to go on a 18-6 run to end the first half.
