Sauk beats Dogs for a WCCN win | ||||||||||||
Sauk Centre outscored the Bulldogs boys' basketball team 16-8 in the first period and 12-6 in the third period and won a West Central Conference North game in Paynes-ville 63-45 on Thursday night. Sauk Centre improved to 2-0 in conference games with the win. The Dogs played better in the second period, scoring 16 points compared to 20 for Sauk, and in the fourth period, matching the Main-streeters with 15 points each. "We played two tough quarters, and we seemed very rusty from Christmas break," said coach Phil Carlson. "This is not how we wanted to play or how we expected to play. We gave them too many easy points in the lane, and this needs to be emphasized as our opponents will continue to do this if we do not get tougher." "Knowing our players," added Carlson, "they will work and get back on track for Cathedral and New London-Spicer." The Dogs (2-6 overall, 0-2 in the WCCN) were led by sophomore Cory Nietfeld with 19 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and three steals against Sauk. This week, the Bulldogs will host St. Cloud Cathedral on Friday, and next week they will host NL-S on Monday, Jan. 17.
