Stars take sixth at Pine City tourney | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The River Lakes Stars boys' hockey team took sixth place in an eight-team tournament at Pine City last week. The Stars lost 4-3 to Pequot Lakes on Thursday, beat Barron (Wis.) 4-2 on Friday, and lost 2-1 to Sartell on Saturday in the consolation final. Senior Kyle Curran scored five goals in the tournament, including a hat trick against Pequot Lakes and the Stars' only goal against Sartell. He had a goal and an assist in the Stars' victory against Barron. In that game, the Stars jumped to a 2-1 game in the first period, on goals by sophomore Ryan Weber and junior Mike Anderson. After a scoreless second period, the Stars put the game away with goals by Curran and junior defenseman Mark Kissner in the third period, with Barron scoring a late goal to make the final 4-2. The Stars outshot Barron 27-12. The Stars gave up third-period goals to lose to both Pequot Lakes and Sartell. Pequot Lakes broke a 3-3 tie with a third-period goal, and Sartell broke a 1-1 tie with a third-period tally. Against Pequot Lakes, senior goaltender Justin Hartfiel made 29 saves for the Stars, who were outshot 33-24. The Stars are now 3-6-1 for the season. Next week, the Stars play St. Cloud Tech in Richmond on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7:30 p.m.
