A committee from the Lions Club polled area churches and nursing homes to see which students were helping in the community. The award is to recognize students for something other than academics, sports or music.
Schefers is the daughter of Ken and Julie Schefers, rural Paynesville. She is the leader of the peer helpers, a Big Sister to an elementary student, plays the organ at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Lake Henry, sings in the church choir and plays the piano at the Good Samaritan Care Center.
Schefers is also vice president of the high school choir, plays the trumpet, piano and trombone in the jazz band, is a member of the drum line, is the drum major for the marching band, president of the high school band and was a member of the St. Cloud Marching Band last summer. She is also an honor roll student and works at the Country Inn.
Johnson is the son of Dick and Carol Johnson, rural Paynesville. A member of Paynesville Evangelical Free Church, he went on a mission trip to Minneapolis, is a member of “On Call” singing group and went on a mission trip to India and Nepal with “On Call” last summer.
Johnson is also a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the track and cross country team, president of the choir and pops choir, attended state choral competition, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and plays in a band, “Foundation.”
