Roscoe to celebrate its Fun Days this weekend

By Michael Jacobson

The community of Roscoe will celebrate its 27th Fun Days festival on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11. The community festival will be two days again this year, after a one-day celebration a year ago.

A mixed volleyball tournament on Saturday kicks off the festival. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. at the baseball field and will last all day. Call organizer Art Schlangen at 320-597-3591 to register.

On Sunday, the annual parade - with a theme of American Pride: We Remember 9/11 - will start at 12:30 p.m. The parade starts on the east end of town, heads west on First Street, turns south on Main Street, goes around the block, and ends by the Catholic church.

Parade grand marshals this year are long-time residents Norbert and Betty Osendorf, who still farm north of Roscoe.

New this year for the parade is a $100 cash prize for the best float, to be decided by four anonymous judges.

Following the parade, activities will continue in the baseball park on the west side of town. Games for kids and adults and a beer garden will be available in the park in the afternoon. A deejay will play from 1 to 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m., a raffle drawing will be held. For buttons (which also are needed for entry to the street dance), two $50 drawings will be held on Saturday and another $100 drawing will be held on Sunday. It will be possible for a single button to win up to $150 in the button drawing.

On Sunday, a separate quilt raffle and a door prize raffle also will be held. Chances for these raffles will be sold throughout the festival.

Roscoe Fun Days will conclude on Sunday night with a street dance, with music by Chaser, at the baseball park from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Buttons for admission will cost $5.
