Comment period for sewer open

By Melissa Andrie

A public comment period on the city's wastewater treatment facility began on Friday, June 30 and will end on Monday, July 31. The city's permit for the sewer system expired at the end of August 2005.

The system includes one aerated pond, an additional seven-part pond system, irrigation sites, monitoring wells, and a stormwater retention area. It can treat 887,000 gallons per day during wet weather, detaining water for 245 days when handling that flow. Average flow over the past year was reported as 701,900 gallons each day.

A draft has been prepared for the renewal of the permit for an additional five years.

Written comments must include a show of interest in the permit application or the draft permit, suggested action for change, with references to specific sections of the draft, and reasons for the position.

A public hearing by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency may also be requested, but it must include a statement identifying the matter of concern, the reasons the meeting should be held, and the issues to be addressed at the meeting in addition to the information required for a written comment.

Comments, which must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 31, may be submitted to Stephanie Handeland; Municipal Division; Minnesota Pollution Control Agency; 520 Lafayette Road N.; St. Paul, MN 55155. Copies of the draft permit are also available at that address.
