Hospital approves new member of medical staff

By Michael Jacobson

The Paynesville Area Hospital District Board of Directors took the following actions at their meeting on Wednesday, June 28.

*The board approved its May financial statements, which included a profit of $62,875 for the month, bringing the district's year-to-date profits (thru eight months) to $819,924, above the budgeted profit of $757,689 so far.

*The board continued discussions about opening a new clinic in Spicer. Administration has been negotiating with Spicer officials, but no lease has been signed yet.

The Paynesville Area Health Care System - the business name for the hospital district - needs to recruit another physician in order to open a new clinic. Some hospital board members continue to be concerned about Spicer's relative closeness to Willmar (nine miles to Rice Memorial Hospital) and its distance from Paynesville (18 miles).

*The board appointed Dr. Juan Lewis, M.D. (family practice), to the active medical staff. Dr. Lewis started his practice at the Paynesville Area Medical Clinic last week.

*The board appointed Dr. Patrick Heller, M.D., to the consulting staff.

*The board approved a slight change to the medical staff bylaws, allowing an official meeting if half of the member physicians attend, instead of requiring a majority. With ten physicians now on staff, this will allow official meetings when five physicians can attend, instead of requiring six.
