School board positions open for filing in July |
Filings open on Tuesday, July 5, and close on Tuesday, July 19, at 5 p.m. for four school board positions. Elections will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8 for the four positions currently held by board members Mark Dingmann, Deb Glenz, Allen Schmidt, and Tami Stanger. To qualify for a position on the seven-member board, a candidate must be an eligible voter, 21 years of age when assuming office in January 2006, and a resident of the school district for 30 days prior to the election. There is a $2 filing fee. All positions are four-year terms that will take effect in January. The board meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 8 p.m., and board members also serve on various school committees that frequently meet after school. Committees, as well as board officers, are chosen by the board in January. Currently, Schmidt is the board chair, Glenz the vice-chair, and Stanger the treasurer. Glenz has served on the board since 1994, having been elected three times, while Dingmann, Stanger, and Schmidt are completing their first four-year terms. If more than eight file for the school board, by state law a primary election will be held in September to narrow the field down to eight, which is double the number of positions available and the maximum that can be on the ballot in November. Candidates must file at the district office, located at 217 Mill Street West, attached to Paynesville Area Elementary School.
