Commencement is Sunday afternoon

By Linda Stelling

Commencement exercises at the Paynesville Area High School will be held on Sunday, June 10, at 2 p.m. in the high school gym.

This will be the second year the ceremony is held on a Sunday afternoon. John Janotta, high school principal, said Friday nights conflicted with state track meets. "I heard a lot of good comments about holding it Sunday afternoon," he said.

Ninety-four seniors will take part in the ceremony, which marks the end of their high school career. The Class of 2001 will be the smallest class at Paynesville Area High School to graduate since 78 seniors graduated in 1993.

Presenting the senior address and farewell will be Jamie Teicher and Cynthia Bollman, and the high school band and choir will perform several numbers.

Dean Hanson, president of the Paynesville Citizen's Scholarship Foundation, will announce the scholarship award winners. Fifty-three scholarships will be awarded totaling $19,543.

Paynesville has 43 honors students this year with six seniors graduating summa cum laude with a grade point average of 3.8 or higher: Bollman, Travis Flanders, Scott Ingalsbe, Eric Korman, Martin Lieser, and Teicher.
