Hoeft reaches dairy princess finals |
Steph Hoeft, a senior at Paynesville Area High School, was selected to be a finalist for the 2001 Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition, to be held in August just before the State Fair. She is one of 12 county dairy princesses from across Minnesota who will compete for the state title. "I was extremely shocked to be selected," said Hoeft, the daughter of Jerry and Melody Hoeft of rural Paynesville. "The competition was tough and they were talented girls," she added. The finalists were announced Sunday night at the conclusion of a statewide dairy promotion seminar held in St. Cloud from May 18 to 20. Over 100 dairy princesses from across the state participated in the judging sessions for finalist consideration. Judges selected the 12 finalists based on a written essay, a personal interview and a three-minute speech. Leanne Kolb, another senior at PAHS, also competed over the weekend. Princess Kay of the Milky Way serves as the official goodwill ambassador for Minnesota's dairy industry. Judging for the title will start on Monday, Aug. 20, prior to the start of the Minnesota State Fair. Princess Kay of the Milky Way will be crowned on Wednesday night, Aug. 22. Kandiyohi Dairy Princess April Herem, who was crowned Region V Dairy Princess in 1993, was the last local girl to compete for the state title.
