Residents invited to learn about shorelines

This article submitted on 4/25/01.

Area residents interested in learning how to restore shorelines are encouraged to get their planting equipment out of storage.

The Rice Lake and Koronis Lake Associations, Sherburne County Extension Service, and Stearns County Soil and Water Conser-vation Districts have teamed up to sponsor this event.

On Friday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 26, area residents can get hands-on learning about lakescaping close to home.

On June 8, the shoreline of the Tom and Karen Berg property on Lake Koronis will be planted. This will include a restoration of a shoreline with vegetation. Participants are to bring their yard equipment (soil rakes, shovels, small gardening spades, etc.). They will be seeding the area, covering and staking the area with erosion control blanket, planting small plugs or seedlings of native wildflowers and grasses, and planting trees and shrubs. This will transform an area that the Bergs have struggled to mow and maintain in sod grass because of the steepness of slope, into a beautiful buffer for Lake Koronis.

On June 26, participants will plant the shoreline of Al and Sharon Ihrke on Rice Lake. This event will include the planting of their shoreline and restoring of native vegetation.

Participants will be seeding the area, covering the area with straw mulch, planting small plugs or seedlings of native wildflowers and grasses, and planting trees and shrubs. This will transform an area that the Ihrke's have struggled with maintaining sod grass cover, goose problems, and have had erosion problems into a great natural area near the lake.
