Three PAHS students compete at state speech meet

Three Paynesville Area High School students competed in the Class A state speech meet on Friday but did not place in the top eight in their respective category.

Junior Peter Schreifels competed in serious interpretation of prose, junior Sami Tierney competed in creative expression, and ninth grader Courtney Colbert competed in serious interpretation of poetry. Schreifels and Tierney took first in section competition to advance to state, while Colbert was third.

The state speech meet was held at Centenniel High School in Circle Pines on Friday (for Class A) and on Saturday (for Class AA).

Mounds Park Academy had the most state placewinners in Class A. Mounds Park Academy qualified 23 students for state and had 16 medalists, including four gold medals.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley was second with 20 qualifiers and 13 medalists. With one champion, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley now has 28 state speech champions from 1969 to 2003, the most in Class A but trailing Apple Valley, Eagan, and Forest Lake in Class AA.

St. Cloud Cathedral was third in Class A with six medalists.

Paynesville now has qualified students for the state speech meet for three consecutive years.
