Three candidates run for supervisor

A year after a contested race drew a record 560 voters, Paynesville Township has three candidates running for supervisor this year: incumbent Warren Nehring and challengers Edward J. McIntee and Patrick Meagher. The election will be held on Tuesday, March 12.

Edward J. McIntee
Edward McIntee
Edward J. McIntee has been a permanent resident of Paynesville Township for seven years and a seasonal resident for 34 years. He owns M & H Equipment. He has three sons and seven grandchildren.

He ran for township supervisor a year ago and lost by 18 votes, 289-271. He served for five years on the planning commission in Deep Haven and for 15 years on the Hennepin County Draft Board, including five years as chairman.

Which is more important: the delivery of township services like snowplowing, road maintenance, and road paving or the cost of township government through taxes?
Both have equal importance.

What is your long-range vision for Paynesville Township? What does the board need to do in the next three years to insure that vision?
Consider incorporating the township! This will stop annexation. (Reference: St. Cloud vs. St. Augusta)

  Pat Meagher
Pat Meagher
Patrick Meagher, 42, has lived in Paynesville Township and the city of Paynesville for 30 years and has worked as a driver for the United Parcel Service (UPS) for 18 years.

He and his wife, Lorie, have six children.

He has no government experience, but has been a regular attendee of township meetings for more than a year.

Which is more important: the delivery of township services like snowplowing, road maintenance, and road paving or the cost of township government through taxes?
I feel they are equally important. We need to give the best services for the lowest possible cost.

What is your long-range vision for Paynesville Township? What does the board need to do in the next three years to insure that vision?
I'd like to see progress made towards a swimming pool/complex. We should include that on the airport survey (a survey to see if township residents support township participation in the proposed airport). If the people support a pool, we should start a fund for it.

Highway 23 will have a big impact on our community. We need to listen to our people and relay their message to MnDOT as soon as possible.

  Warren Nehring
Warren Nehring
Incumbent Warren Nehring, 61, has lived in Paynesville Township for seven years and has served on the township board as a supervisor for just over six years. Currently self-employed and semi-retired, he farmed in the area for 23 years, worked as the superintendent at the golf course for seven years, owned a septic and drain cleaning business in Paynesville for 15 years, and has done landscaping for 10 years.

He is single, with four children and 11 grandchildren.

Which is more important: the delivery of township services like snowplowing, road maintenance, and road paving or the cost of township government through taxes?
Both are very important because this is our job as supervisors to provide those services to our residents and taxpayers as efficiently as possible.

What is your long-range vision for Paynesville Township? What does the board need to do in the next three years to insure that vision?
1) Start a web page so local and outstate people can keep up on what is happening in Paynesville Township. We used to put together a newsletter, but I think this would give better and more complete information.

2) That some people would appreciate supervisors more for what they do right than for what they might find they do wrong.

3) Need to keep supervisors on our board that are broad-minded.

4) Computer in our office so we can get information and send information to and from our county.

5) Swimming pool by the township office and ice arena. A lot of the things that are needed are already there: bathrooms, showers, concession stand, parking, land, maintenance man, central location, and possible connection to trail.

(Editor's Note: The Press's profiles of the three supervisor candidates in Paynesville Township will continue next week and run through the election on Tuesday, March 12.)
