Annual chess tourney held at the middle school |
The annual chess tournament at the Paynesville Area Middle School on Saturday drew 49 contestants from central Minnesota to play in a Swiss-style tournament. Each player received one point for a win and a half point for a draw, with the computer matchmaker pitting the highest individual scorers against each other. Paynesville had one champion and four runners-up in the five age categories. Ezra Thompson took first among nine- to 11-year-olds. Taking second were Joshua Andersen (0-8), Peder Thompson (12-14), and Phillip Yungk (15-17). In addition to the tournament, players had the chance to see and play on a giant chessboard, created by Jay Thompson, tournament director. The 8Õ by 8Õ board uses bowling pins for pawns.
