Annual chess tourney held at the middle school

Chess tourney The annual chess tournament at the Paynesville Area Middle School on Saturday drew 49 contestants from central Minnesota to play in a Swiss-style tournament.

Each player received one point for a win and a half point for a draw, with the computer matchmaker pitting the highest individual scorers against each other.

Paynesville had one champion and four runners-up in the five age categories. Ezra Thompson took first among nine- to 11-year-olds. Taking second were Joshua Andersen (0-8), Peder Thompson (12-14), and Phillip Yungk (15-17).

In addition to the tournament, players had the chance to see and play on a giant chessboard, created by Jay Thompson, tournament director. The 8Õ by 8Õ board uses bowling pins for pawns.
